Yes, you can track the evolution of all EOG bugs in bugzilla.gnome.org

In fact your suggestion was reported in bugzilla sometime ago. You can

I'm interesting in solving this bug, too. For this reason, I'm studing
which is the better solution and if it's necessary refactor some EOG
components to provide a new API for image navigation.
