My first thought is a snag in the driver.  It works 
to detect the camera at least but not to the point 
of acquiring an image.  You really need to get an 
image with a camera software before tackling Ekiga.

A brutal solution is to sell or give the camera to 
someone with an MS-Win system and buy a UVC or 
IEEE1394 camera.

Cameras are a pain!
