The TeX escaping that worries you stems from bug #112377, see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112377 for details

The source code comment before the "guilty" tex_escape_string() function
talks about adding an "export option" to skip escaping. As these export
options are not available: How about an additional PDF export filter
that skips escaping?
