avoid backup files

Hello,
I want to disable the creation of backup .dia~ files. How can this be
done please? I can't find anything in the preferences.
Secondly, I'd like to know how to handle .dia files in Konqueror,
because dia files are shown as gzip files. Maybe a MIME type should be
added somewhere, any suggestion is welcome.
