I couldn't get it to work either, then I went to edit>preferences>extensions  
scrolled down to the Online Sources section and found I had 2 emusic options
selected; I deselected the import emusic files option and left emusic store
enabled.  then tried to download again from emusic, a small box appeared at
bottom left of Banshee showing download progress.
Bizarrely when I went back to edit>preferences>extensions both emusic items
were selected again, but downloading is now working for me (ubuntu 11.10,
banshee 2.2.1)
