As the error says, listening to Last.fm radio with third-party software that uses the new(ish) Last.fm API  is not available to non-subscribers.  The official Last.fm client is exempt from this (I assume) because it doesn't fall into the "third-party" category.  Some other third-party applications, like Rhythmbox, might still work with Last.fm if they use the old API, which is technically deprecated and could stop functioning at any time.

Banshee could attempt to make Last.fm radio available to non-subscribers by using the old API as a fallback, but there's always the chance that this effort would become obsolete as soon as it is finished, if Last.fm would choose to disallow the old API.  It's also possible that intentionally circumventing the restrictions of the new API would be a violation of Last.fm's terms of use.

This is my understanding of the situation, at least.  Bertrand and others would know much more about this, and you could probably find extra details if you search through Banshee's bug reports for a closed bug related to the new Last.fm API.  Hope that helps,

I can add radio stations in the last.fm scrobbler software (open source) without getting the error, so I rule out that it is due do to a missing last.fm premium account.

Any ideas?
