I thought I had a student who was going to be able to work on these bugs
as a project, but he switched to a completely different project,
unfortunately. I'm looking for a replacement, but I'm not holding out
much hope at the moment.

In terms of the effect of these bugs on users, I've been in the same
boat as Nicholas: I basically can't use my iPod Classic with Banshee.
I agree with Nicholas about their importance, and I'd really like to see
some concerted effort to get these bugs fixed; I only wish that I had
the time myself to work on it, but I'm behind on several other projects
as it is.
