Merriam-Webster OnLine defines "corrupt" (adjective) as:

1 a : morally degenerate and perverted : DEPRAVED b : characterized by
improper conduct (as bribery or the selling of favors) <corrupt judges>
2 : PUTRID, TAINTED
3 : adulterated or debased by change from an original or correct
condition synonym see VICIOUS

Hardly any of those meanings is suitable for an ASCII string in the
beginning of a cpio archive. I have no idea why hexadecimal numbers can
be "corrupt", while octal numbers in the old style header are in the worst
case "corrupted" :-)

I'm reverting this change. Thank you for your help!
