gtk-entry-select-on-focus not working

Hi,
I am trying to get a cell in a tree view to accept this command from the
.gtkrc-2.0 and it will not.
I have gtk-entry-select-on-focus = 0 in the .gtkrc-2.0 file.
can this be set in the program itself intsead of with the gtkrc file?
System Gentoo 2005.0
gtkmm 2.8.1
gtk+ 2.8.9
