Better use XFree86 directly by putting ZAxisMapping 4 5 in the "Pointer" section of your XFree86 config file. All gtk applications can then be scrolled by the wheel automatically. I tried it with a self written application that doesn't do the slightest effort to support the wheel: simply works. A few other applications, most notably netscape just work as well.
