Localization

Can anyone point me to a reference in writing localized code for
Gtk+ please? I'm trying to handle things like sorting and also
number and currency formatting in a localized way and I saw that
there is a routine called gtk_set_locale so I'm using that. The
default locale seems to be called "C" and when I use the monetary
information from localeconv(), it seems to be quite messed up.
Things like no currency symbols and the number of fractional digits
set to 127.

Any help or references to code I can read would be greatly
appreciated. I was programming in Java and this is one thing
I miss from there unless I can find something similar available
for Linux (part of glibc?).

Sorry if this is a generic question or not really gtk+ oriented
but I did see the gtk_set_locale call and thought there was perhaps
something included in gtk.
