So the gcc 2.8.1 instructions do work for egcs. Good! I'll update my page
and ask Ariel to update his mirror (Ariel's instructions are a mirror of
mine... ;-).

Same for me with gcc 2.8.1. It's good to know that both compilers can be
used to compile GTK on IRIX 6.x.
