Yes and no. I'd say its the internationalization stuff that is broken.
It assumes that either your C library or your X library has certain
multibyte manipulation functions. Which seems not to be the case for
you.

Question: do you get a message like:

  Checking for <wchar.h> or <wcstr.h> ... no

 when you run configure, or did you run configure with the
 --with-locale=LANG option set to something that your OS doesn't
 support. (like no_NO ????)

 Is mbtowc (for example) defined in any header files?

I'll try to figure out some way to support such situations, though
it might take a while.
