Yes, i've looked at the indix project.  i wish they would hurry up and
merge their changes back into the mainline sources.  i am not about to
dump my debian system for RH and downgrade XFree86.  My video card might
even stop working.

i understand your helplessness.  At least the report is in bugzilla
for anyone with the requisite background.  Next year, i'll see what
i can come up with ...
