Good luck with GARNOME; it may be easier for some.  But it doesn't yet
include everything you need, and jhbuild is up-to-the-minute from CVS
(which is both good and bad).

I would recommend, for anyone building parts of GNOME from CVS, using at
least the "jhbuild bootstrap" part of jhbuild, since it will check your
tools versions and go out and install newer ones if you need them.  

I recommend:

libtool 1.4.3 
autoconf 2.57
automake 1.7.3 (you will probably need 1.4 also, since some GNOME
modules explicitly ask for version 1.4; you might even need 1.6)

Newer versions of these packages may work as well, but older ones are
likely to cause problems.
