No, gmime just uses the C io stuff (unistd and stdio) plus mmap. It is  
sort of an abstraction for stdio, but with support for filters and 'io' to  
memory. I would like to see some of that code merged into glib, so you get  
the best of both.
The problem with glib and gmime is that there is no ready support for TLS/ 
SSL, but for gmime it should be possible.
