Sounds like a problem with the MIME header your mailer is putting on the
patch attachment (or adding to the mail in total as a result of it being
a multipart message). Can you see what headers are being appended.
Normally the outgoing mail would be multipart/mixed as the Content-Type
for the mail and the patch attachment would most likely have a
Content-Type of text/plain.
Very mysterious, since you are using mutt, so it should Just Work(tm).
