In case you want to consider XSLT optimisations, Michael Kay has written a
really good article about the implementation of Saxon.

Lots of very interesting stuff in there, particularly about how he
optimises XPath queries. I personally have only implemented one of these
optimisations in XML::XPath, and it's given me some ideas about other
things I could do.
