On Fedora (I'll call it 4+) I am running
udev-071 dbus-0.50 hal-0.5.5.1 and gnome-volume-manager 1.5.3. Even my rawhide box (updated yesterday) is only running gvm 1.5.3.
What does gnome-volume-manager show when you run it from from a terminal window?
You could also do a dbus-monitor --system (as root) and dbus-monitor --session (as yourself) and also run (as root) hald --retain-privileges --daemon=no --verbose. If you go back to hal 0.5.5.1 you can use the --use-syslog option to have the hald output go to syslog (very useful) and you can skip the --daemon=no option.
Also if you are in by any chance running selinux in enforcing mode you need to make sure that everything is labeled correctly or it will break.
Andrew
