[Utopia] New gnome-vfs hal patch

Hey Alex,

Here's a new GNOME VFS hal patch. It's basically a complete rewrite as
the old patch disabled all the /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab reading. This
was bad since a) some volumes, such as network drives or RAID/LVM
volumes in /etc/fstab are out of the reach of hal; and b) GNOME VFS
needs this otherwise some of the API might fail.

So this patch is much less intrusive in that respect. When GNOME VFS
sees something new in /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab and decides to create a
new GnomeVFSDrive or GnomeVFSVolume object it just asks hal for more
information.

The information hal provides comes from the new libhal-storage library
that has somewhat configurable policy that right now only covers icon
names. In the future this policy may include how to name things but I
hope it won't come to that. The point of having libhal-storage decide
the policy is that if other toolkits/file managers/vfs systems uses
libhal-storage we'll get consistent naming. Right now libhal-storage is
localised to danish, german and french.

Other things that this patch does

 1. Audio and blank discs are supported

 2. On Linux, the device file name is used for mount/umount as this is
    required to eject blank/audio discs.

 3. A new hint should_eject is added to GnomeVFSDrive private fields.
Right now this is not exported in the public API but the unmount
operation on a drive uses it. That's a bit hacky, however it's
needed because Nautilus doesn't know how to eject audio and blank
    discs

 4. For audio discs the cdda://<devicefile) activation uri is set up;
not sure this is a good idea since that backend might not be
    available? Suggestions?

 5. Blank discs uses the burn:/// activation uri.

 6. If the hal daemon is not running this patch have no effect

 7. Device specific icons are supported through the storage.icon.drive
and storage.icon.volume properties on the hal device object
representing the drive - see the hal spec for details.

 8. Storage devices tagged as portable audio players and cameras are
supported (they get the right icon) - see the hal spec for details

 9. Fixed disks (e.g. non-hotpluggable and with non-removable media)
are not shown on the desktop (they are without the patch)

The naming policy is best described by looking at the libhal-storage
code here

 http://freedesktop.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/hal/hal/libhal-storage/libhal-storage.c?view=markup

However, these screen shots may be of help

 http://freedesktop.org/~david/gnome-vfs-new-1.png
 http://freedesktop.org/~david/gnome-vfs-new-2.png
 http://freedesktop.org/~david/gnome-vfs-new-3.png

I can split the patch up into several patches if you like it better that
way; I can also do an #ifdef USE_HAL around all the eject changes and
use-device-file-instead-of-mount-point-for-umount.

This patch is against HEAD - (this should probably not go on the 2.8
branch); you'll need the latest and greatest HAL from CVS.

For people running Fedora Rawhide I've built some SRPMs here

 http://people.redhat.com/davidz/gnomevfs_patch/

You need to build both the hal and gnome-vfs2 packages.

Thanks,
David
