Wouldn't it be interesting to split gnome-volume-manager in 2 parts.
one part that runs without gnome or gtk stuff. Glib should be allowed :)
and a part running in gnome.
We could let these two programmes talk to each other using d-bus.
The good thing would be that the second part containing gtk specific
code could be replaced with another app (kde app or a console app for
example).
app1(base) detects a usb stick and mounts it and checks if it contains
pictures. If it contains pictures it sends to app2 that a picture
containing device is found and is mounted on path foo.
app2 can then look in his config what it should do with the mounted
device.
good or bad idea? :)
