Just because Microsoft chose to use that term, and
everybody is following, doesn't mean we should.
OS X doesn't even use a term in the preferences,
except in the desktop context menu, where is says
'desktop background'.

Fair enough.
Parts of the style guide are outdated and refer to
things not seen since GNOME 1.
I plan on reviewing it after 2.14.1 is out.
It now has a component on bugzilla, under gnome-docu.
Please file a bug :)
