If you have the same image as .png and .jpg, there's no point in giving it different names, is there? If I have my business card as an svg and a pdf, why give them different names?? In these cases the most reasonable thing to do is to rely on extensions or for that part on some other indication of the format.

Occasionally I keep two or more versions of a file from different dates. When I do, I mention the date in the filenames -- for example, "Business card 2004" and "Business card 2005". That doesn't mean Gnome should incorporate the modification date into every filename.

It's the same for filetypes. Occasionally I save the same file in two or more formats. When I do, I can mention the filetype in the filenames -- for example, "Business card (SVG)" and "Business card (PDF for print shop)". That doesn't mean Gnome should incorporate the filetype into every filename.

But as for now there is no other indication granted as soon as you have thumbs turned on and thumbs help you finding, what you're looking for.

Perhaps filetype indicators could be overlaid on thumbnails, in the same way as they're currently overlaid on the generic document icon.
