Ordinary use? By virtue of even being on this list I do not think any of
us count as ordinary users anymore.

And to directly address your question:
Can I search gnome help to find out what any of that means?

Is there a system administration tool which could help a user to discover,
learn and remember how to do that task in an efficient and reliable way?

Gnome could do better. (Even if Gnome was brilliant it could still do
better.)
