Work certainly is being done on that. As long as you aren't one of
those people who insist on having an OS X theme available by default
(shudder), GNOME should have some better eye candy for you pretty
soon, if not right now:

If the dialog was made partially transparent, the document would be
visible. Failing that, why not manually shade/roll-up the dialog?
