Ctrl+I will get you the information you want, it should all appear in in
the properties dialog and selecting a file will show you some information
in the status bar.

Some users find tooltips annoying, developers more so than ordinary users
so they may have been reluctant to add such a feature.

It is also posssible no one ever asked or it is something the developers
have not got around to adding yet. It might be a good idea to check
Bugzilla to see if there are any similar requests against Nautilus.

What is about the Properties dialog that you do not like?
Why not use List View?

Perhaps there are some problems with them we could solve instead?

I'm not sure about the current version of Nautilus does but in older
versions you could set the Preferences to show additional information
underneath the filename. Go to Preferences, Icon Captions, and choose
what captions you would like. This seems like an ideal solution to your
problem.

The current behaviour is intended to make things _less compicated_ in
general but trying to things differently from the defaults will always
require extra work which is why we try so hard to set defaults that will
work well enough for the biggest possible audience.
