Yup, wrong place I'm afraid
(I was going to point you to the description explaining that this list is
for discussing ways to improve the usability of Gnome but we dont seem to
be on the list anymore:
Not sure where to suggest besides a Debian list.

If you are going for minimal I would have thought you'd use XDM not GDM
but maybe that is not the kind of minimal you have in mind.
