I imagine gnumeric can do it because they have customised their widgets
to do so.  So no, it would not be essential that GTK supported it.  If
it didn't, though, you're going to end up in the situation we have now--
it would be up to every application developer to write their own support
for it, so some apps would do it well, others badly, and others not at
all...
