Well, not all of us think your butt is ugly... but...
yes, alpha blending is better. Don't hold your breath for
the Render extension support, though.

shows a sample stippled shadow falling on a gnome-terminal.
They are only OK when the shadow is fairly small.
It'd be neat to vary the shadow by the window's z-axis, so as to
simulate height.
I'd like that a lot, I often send the front window to the back by mistake,
because of poor visual clues.
