Let's not forget KDE users. Gnome's user population may not currently
contain many Windows users, but I bet it contains a lot of KDE users (at
least on Linux - I'm sure it's a different story on Solaris).

Apart from accidentally typing Ctrl-S in a terminal or Ctrl-W outside of
a terminal, is there any reason to avoid Windows/KDE-style keybindings?
Because I don't see those two accidents as a good enough reason to break
compatibility. You can always nuke something if you type in the wrong
window; different keybindings won't fix that. If we use Alt instead of
Ctrl there will still be clashes with programs like Emacs, plus we will
be incompatible with Windows and KDE.
