I just fixed the way filehandles returned from be_open_*() are tested.
Earlier, the test would always succeed. This wasn't serious, as the backends
would find the infiles empty, and nothing would be written to outfiles that
weren't actually open.
This involved changes to all the backends, so please let me know if something
behaves oddly (relating to file IO).
