I think inheritance would be a very useful and powerful facility. I
wasn't part of the discussion today so I don't know the arguments that
were put forward. Mark, couldn't we implement a form of inheritance
fairly easily by having an ordered list of profiles to apply? Each
profile in the list has higher precedence then the profile occurring
before it in the list because it may overwrite the previous profiles
settings.

This is strictly inheritance, but it might represent a reasonable
compromise without significantly altering the existing architecture.
