[Rhythmbox-devel] multimedia keys

Can someone tell me what the current prevailing wisdom is concerning
multimedia keys and RB?  I am using openbox in gnome.  So I could bind
the key events of my multimedia keys to the commands

rhythmbox --next and rhythmbox --whatever 

in openbox, but that only works with RB.  For xmms there is an itouch
plugin with makes the multimedia keys work even if xmms isn't in focus
or even on a different desktop, which is spectacular.  I have tried
using the gnome-keybinidng-properties dialog but even after setting
all the keys it doens't do anything.

Any ideas.  The ideal would be to somehow have whatever player is on
at the time respond to the multimedia keys.  Is that even possible.
