I agree that would be nice. If you want to work on adding it, look at
the rb-play-order-* files in the shell directory. It's probably pretty
easy to do by adding play orders, but the design might be cleaner if
someone figured out a way to reify groups of songs according to some
rule and then apply another play order to the groups. (You'd wind up
with a chain of play orders, each of which passes control to the next
one to order its subgroups)
If/when rhythmbox is using ReplayGain, playing by album should switch to
using the by-album volume adjustment, while other playing should (maybe)
use the by-track one.
