Performance is a concern, but also one I do not want to attack
prematurely. For example, python per se may not be the culprit, but
rather the fact that we have to parse and index browser bookmarks and
history files. Perhaps a better solution would have such database
queries provided by an "epiphany-data-server" appended to the current
evolution-d-s.

Start-up time may not be that big an issue if it's a one-off and doesn't
stop you otherwise using your desktop. This may be a bigger concern for
those who want to replace the Alt-F2 Run dialog.

Also, my understanding is that there is a difference between getting
deskbar into GNOME, and getting deskbar into (onto?) the default GNOME
desktop. We've shipped mini-commander for a number of years now as a
power-user feature.

Regardless, starting quicker and taking less memory are almost always
worthy goals.

Nigel.
