There have been some adventurous issues with gettext (libintl) on
FreeBSD/Darwin, I'll do some experimentation, could take a couple of
days :)

Hm, that function is supposed to be in gettext (libintl). Is
ENABLE_NLS defined in config.h after you've run autogen.sh/configure?
