It should definitely work with an lpr printer, so if you've enabled lpr 
emulation (I think it's called that) in your cups configuration, things 
should work.

PDF and PS file should also work, at least it did last time I tried in 
FC2. Could it possible just be a case of the file ending up somewhere 
hidden or with the wrong name?

There have been problems with printing in some locales in the past, so 
you could also try starting planner from a terminal with:

LANG=C planner

unless you're already running in English.
