  I think you should follow Michael's suggestion and remove the .la
files in /usr/lib.  Libtool is (and will always be) buggy.  In general, 
binutils (ld) and gcc are evil in the way the always search /usr/lib and
/usr/include first, regardless of any options or environment variables. 
Libtool seems to want to inherit this (imho) broken behaviour.
