New facts in the case: the above worked like a charm when I compiled and
tested the programs at my laptop running Debian, with ORBit installed
from Debian packages.
However, when I run the code at the target system, a IBM-SP node running
AIX, with ORBit installed from the source tar-ball, the memory is not
returned.
I guess I have to go back and look over the ORBit installation really,
really close. *sigh*
Has anyone experienced something similar on some systems?
