I've run into lots and lots of weirdness in this area. It seems to work
with for me with ORBit 0.5.8, orbit-perl from GNOME CVS, and OpenORB 1.0.1
on the Java side (but not OpenORB 1.1.0). And I think ORBit 0.5.3 +
orbit-perl 0.4.3 + OpenORB 1.0.1 also works.

Using Perl or C? C I can't help, and it seems like you already know what
you're doing in Perl...
