I have exactly the same setup as you : ipw2200, hidden SSID, WEP104. I 
have no trouble with mine. It was said a couple days ago that the other 
laptops in adhoc mode with the same ssid might be the ones to blame for 
your problem.

My recommandation here is to try the usual suspects one by one and see 
what fails.

- does it work with iwconfig et al. ?
- what's the output in /var/log/messages or better yet, run nm with 
--no-deamon and see what goes on when you connect.
- if you have "some" amount of control of the network, try turning off 
the adhoc setup latops.
