networkmanager thinks it activated the device but i can not even ping the
gateway! what could be the problem here?

and also the routes
route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 ath0
192.168.221.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 vmnet1
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ath0
================================================
It appears there is a VMWare interface running vmnet1. My suggestion is
to take down the vmnet1 interface so that your routing table looks like
and restarting NM
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 ath0
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ath0
If your pings now work, you have a starting point for diagnosis. I do
not believe that NM can deal with the VMWare interface vmnet1.
