Scary. I'm eager to know what you're trying to do after clearing the selection. If you want to pop up the background context menu, then you should rather try to fix bug 94618 [1]. I'm pretty much sure you want to operate on the open folder in some way. Note that you can already do this by right-clicking the "Location:" label, the location button in the lower-left corner or (after applying [2]) the active path bar item.
