First check gconf key /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/video x-msvideo  There
should be something like totem-video-thumbnailer %u %o. Totem should be
configured using xine, not gstreamer. Note, that gstreamer-video-
thumbnailer doesn't work fine :) At least for me.

Anyhow, check this key and then run that tumbnailer like this:

$thumbnailer movie.avi thumb.jpg

It should generate you thumb.jpg, probably this process will give you
some error messages.
