This is certainly how it works on Windows, so anyone switching over from
that will be somewhat confused (and/or annoyed) if they can't do this.
(I've added links to all my drives on my Windows Desktop, since you're
not given any by default-- and they all appear in my Desktop folder and
work just like I'd expect them to.)
