*Wow*, this goes a long way towards making the tree sidepane really useful!
Good stuff, hope you get it past code review. ;-)

  [ I guess the only major weirdnesses remaining is lack of context menus
  and those weird openable leaf directories with "(Empty)" items in them. ]
