That function is a test which isn't even normally compiled into
nautilus. The reason this happen is because nautilus explicitly puts the
home link first, then any volume links, then normal files, then the
trash. If you're interested in the code, look at
fm_desktop_icon_container_icons_compare() in
src/file-manager/fm-icon-container.c.
