This patch has some issues.
The fact that the settings are saved per-directory metadata implies that
it's used consistantly, but in fact only the view uses it. It is not used
by the tree sidebar or when calculating icon counts (although those do use
the global prefs).
Maybe it would be better with a setting that is per-window only. So you
can override the global setting. The setting would be the same when you
change directories, but isn't saved in the directory metadata. So if you
view it in a different window the setting can be different there.
