It's quite easy to add new browsable locations to nautilus (eg imap:
uris or stuff like that), you only need to write a gnome-vfs module,
which is quite simple (hint: cool new gnome-vfs modules are always
welcome :p).
Afaik, browsing in archives is working in gnome-vfs, the main issue is
to correctly integrate it in nautilus.
