Why nautilus is no fast ?

Hello friends,
I'm french, and I use Debian woody
I dont use nautilus to navigate in my desktop because it's to slow,even
if I load a simple directory.
I have an Duron 650, and gmc, the old filemanager for gnome, is very
fast.
My questions are :
Why nautilus is so slow, to simpl load my home directory, who contains
about 50 files and directories ?
Do nautilus developpers work to made it faster ?
